Modesto Honor Society welcomes new student members
The Modesto campus held an induction ceremony on November 3rd for 20 students who recently became the newest members of the National Technical Honor Society.
Of the 20 students who joined NTHS, 14 attended and brought their families to the event, which was celebrated on campus. “My experience at the NTHS inductee ceremony was amazing,” says Amanda Hick, Medical Assisting student. “I loved having my family and baby there with me, supporting me.”
The National Technical Honor Society offers lifetime membership to students who meet membership requirements of completing 30 units of credit and maintaining a minimum 3.25 GPA, as well as 85% attendance.
NTHS membership provides many benefits to its members. “Membership looks great on their resumes, and if they decide to run for NTHS president, VP or secretary, that would show them taking leadership roles,” says Jennifer Sarhadi, Faculty Advisor. “And, if students decide to continue their education, they can apply for NTHS scholarships. They will also be helping the community through volunteer work and fundraising.”
The induction ceremony acknowledged each new member and their accomplishments. “My experience at the NTHS was one of the best nights I’ve had,” says Cynthia Farias, Medical Assisting student. “I felt like I was important. My hard work paid off and was recognized.”
“Both students joined because it was an honor society and because they will be recognized as honor students during their graduation ceremony,” says Jennifer. “Also, they both plan to continue their education and will be applying for scholarships.”
All SJVC students who joined this honor society will wear special colored tassels to their graduation ceremony in recognition of their scholastic and attendance achievements.
A high point of the induction ceremony’s celebration was the opportunity for campus faculty to meet students’ families. “Being able to discuss students’ achievements with their families, then recognizing each student and seeing how happy they were, were some of the highlights,” says Jennifer.
“I appreciated that we had alumni involved, and I felt like the ceremony was something not just anyone can get,” says Marina Soto, Pharmacy Technology student. “It took hard work and determination to finally get inducted into the National Technical Honor Society.”
Attendees enjoyed refreshments after the ceremony and new inductees enjoyed the fruits of their labor.
