Military Veteran from SJVC Lancaster Follows His Passion and Finds Success in a Criminal Justice Career

As a United States veteran, Marvin Ruano learned to never give up or quit without a fight. He believed in doing his best, no matter what challenge he was facing. He always had a passion for serving his country, but also wanted to find a career where he could continue to serve his community as well.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps for eight years, including two combat tours to Iraq in 2003 and 2005, he got married and decided to change his career. However, with six children his first choice in law enforcement did not exactly fit his schedule. Upon completing his Bachelor’s degree from California State University of Northridge (CSUN), he grew an interest in becoming a corrections officer.

“My journey towards a career in criminal justice has been challenging yet very rewarding,” said Marvin. “In July 2018 I enrolled at San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) in Lancaster with an objective of becoming certified through the Criminal Justice: Corrections program. The training curriculum and certifications interested me and it only made sense to continue serving the public,” added Marvin.

At SJVC Lancaster Marvin enjoyed the paramilitary structure where he was able to get a sense of the pride, honor, courage and commitment that it takes to work within corrections and law enforcement. He appreciated having instructors who are very experienced in the field. Through the program, he gained valuable skills that are required in all aspects of the profession.

“I was part of the Corrections Academy Class 8 and our class motto was geared in excellence,” says Marvin. “That motto has inspired me to keep striving for excellence. I feel my experiences at SJVC has prepared me for a successful career in corrections.”

Like anyone pursuing a career within the criminal justice field, Marvin faced a number of challenges and obstacles that tested his determination. Yet it was his training, conviction, and ultimately his passion, that enabled him to work hard and find success where other students often find failure.

“I have recently applied with California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and with the Victorville Federal Prison for a Corrections Officer position,” says Marvin. “I am looking forward to a great career within the corrections department.”
