A 30+ Year Career: Debbie Huss, Director of Payroll and Benefits’, Evolution at San Joaquin Valley College
It was ‘right time, right place’ for Debbie Huss when in 1989 she applied for and got a Bookkeeper position at San Joaquin Valley College. With only three campuses – Visalia, Fresno, Bakersfield – it was not the multi-faceted position it evolved into over the years, as many more campuses were added.
Debbie’s nameplate changed frequently, recognizing her professional and managerial growth throughout her tenure. Job titles accelerated in task and supervisorial responsibilities. They included Facilities Manager, Human Resources Clerk, Assistant Director of Human Resources, Benefits and Human Resources Manager, Payroll and Benefits Manager to her current title of Director of Payroll and Benefits.
“I touched so many areas of support and operation,” says Debbie. “I’m a self-learner and try to figure things out for myself, and I think SJVC recognized that and acknowledged my hard work.”
That work and professional relationship warrants a look back.
What is your current position and responsibilities at SJVC?
As Director of Payroll and Benefits I oversee a team of four and we are responsible for making sure that employees are paid accurately and on time. We manage things like processing wage changes, status changes, review timecards, reporting and the processing of employee paychecks, as well as payroll deductions.
We also manage employee benefit programs, such as health insurance and retirement plans. We keep track of records to ensure that we remain compliant with the law and answer any questions employees might have about their pay or benefits. Overall, our job is to make sure payroll and benefits run smoothly for everyone in the company.
How did you prepare for this weighty position?
I just happened to be the right person at the right time. Once I got into Human Resources I excelled. SJVC recognized my potential by investing in my professional and personal growth by sending me to conferences and supporting me in obtaining the Certified Payroll Professional (CPP). These kinds of investments have contributed to my ongoing success in my current role.
What motivates you to do your job well?
It is crucial for our Payroll and Benefits team to process payroll accurately for our organization. My team shares a strong work ethic, and our teamwork inspires me to give my best. And, knowing that my work directly affects my colleagues’ financial well-being drives me to maintain high standards and keeps me motivated.
I am grateful for the opportunities, support and growth I have experienced throughout these years. SJVC has been instrumental in my professional development – offering valuable learning experiences and avenues for advancement.
What do you enjoy most in your position?
I enjoy helping others the most. Whether addressing payroll or benefit-related issues, I love analyzing data and solving problems. These issues bring variety to each day and opportunities to learn new things.
How has technology changed the way your department operates over these 30+ years?
Thirty years ago, most of my tasks were performed manually – without the aid of a computer. Today, we have powerful computers and high-speed internet connected to every task.
This allows us to work from home and connect daily through face-to-face Microsoft Teams meetings. We share our screens to show visual examples for training purposes or simply answer a question. It’s like visiting someone’s desk and reduces the need for lengthy email exchanges.
We use InfoZone, a centralized information hub where employees, team members and students can easily access essential information.
Does working ‘remote’ enhance production and communication?
Production is enhanced for the Payroll team because it allows us to focus on our work with fewer interruptions. And with flexible schedules there is always coverage in our department.
Communication is also enhanced because you can send a message through Teams and the entire team will get it. You do not need to reserve a (conference) room for a group meeting or check everyone’s schedule.
What else has changed in the workplace over the years?
Attire! In the past, women were limited to wearing dresses or skirts and nylons were always required. Today, the dress code has become more relaxed, leaning toward a mostly business-casual attire.
What is one of your favorite experiences, looking back?
One of my favorite experiences was when I was the Facility Manager on the Fresno campus. I was the person responsible for distributing their books and students had given me the endearing nickname of the “book lady”.
Out shopping one day I heard a chorus from across the mall, “Hey, Book Lady!” I was both amused and touched by the students’ recognition and their lighthearted way of connecting with me outside the school setting. It was a cheerful reminder of the relationships built and the impact SJVC has on their educational lives.
What other benefits have 30-years with SJVC brought?
I have had the opportunity to build lasting relationships with other colleagues. I share a close bond with others who, like me, are part of the 30+ years group. We embarked on our professional journey together at the Fresno campus where we developed not only a working relationship. but a personal connection as close friends. We maintain frequent conversations, preserving the feeling that we are still working side-by-side.
Witnessing the positive impact the college has had on students has been immensely rewarding. As I celebrate this milestone, I look forward to continuing my commitment to SJVC and contributing to its future success in any way I can.
