Exploring the Future of Medicine: CMA Students Dive into Osteopathic Medicine with CHSU Field Trip

November 12, 2024

The Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) class at SJVC Fresno had a unique opportunity to get a firsthand look at the future of medical education during a visit to the California Health Sciences University (CHSU) College of Osteopathic Medicine. Guided by a current Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) candidate, the students gained insight into both the facility and the exciting curriculum, exposing them to the cutting-edge innovations that shape modern healthcare training.

Discovering Anatomy in a New Dimension with HoloAnatomy

One of the highlights of the visit was experiencing CHSU’s revolutionary HoloAnatomy program. HoloAnatomy utilizes holographic technology, allowing students to study human anatomy in an immersive 3D environment rather than relying on traditional cadavers and dissection labs. Through the use of special holographic displays, students were able to virtually explore anatomical planes, bones, muscles, and more. The technology provides an interactive, multi-dimensional view of human anatomy, enhancing understanding in ways that textbooks simply cannot match.

CMA student Ashly C. said, “the realistic movements and responses made it clear how valuable these tools are for training healthcare professionals. It was fascinating to see how technology can enhance learning, allowing students to practice their skills in a safe and controlled environment before they work with real patients.

For many students, this marked their first time using holographic technology, making it a memorable experience. As they examined lifelike holograms, the students marveled at the technology’s potential to improve anatomical comprehension. Not only were they able to accurately identify anatomical planes, bones, and muscles, but they also gained a deeper appreciation for the role of advanced technology in medical education.

Hands-On Training in the Simulation Center

In addition to the HoloAnatomy experience, the CMA students explored CHSU’s state-of-the-art simulation center, which is equipped with high-fidelity manikins designed to mimic real-life medical scenarios, providing realistic practice in a controlled environment. The simulation center featured several types of manikins, including a ten-year-old child and an infant that could cry, offering students the chance to perform basic assessments and respond to simulated medical conditions, enhancing their practical skills.

Reflecting on a Successful and Motivating Day

For the students, the field trip to CHSU College of Osteopathic Medicine was an unforgettable experience, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities that lie ahead in their healthcare careers. With a mix of holographic anatomy lessons, realistic simulations, and insights into osteopathic practices, the students gained a holistic view of modern medical training.

By the end of the day, many students expressed newfound excitement about their future in healthcare, with some eager to pursue osteopathic medicine and others more determined than ever to make a difference in the field.

“This trip has made me want to pursue something more in this field and further my education,” shared CMA student Baudelio C.

This field trip wasn’t just a break from the classroom – it was an inspiring step forward, bridging their current studies with their future ambitions in the healthcare profession.
