Please tell me about yourself.
I am a 22-year-old dental assistant from Colega, California. I recently graduated from SJVC in Visalia and work at Dr. Ayala Family Dentistry in Hanford. As a child, I dealt with extended illnesses that hospitalized me. Those experiences made me want to work in healthcare.
What motivated you to become a dental assistant?
I was always interested in healthcare and became fascinated by tooth anatomy. After exploring the field, I discovered my passion for dental assisting.
Why did you choose SJVC?
I appreciated the school’s supportive environment, open communication, and positive reputation in my community. The school stayed in touch with me even when personal issues delayed my enrollment.
What was your favorite part of the SJVC program?
I loved the teachers, particularly Miss Jaramillo, who were understanding and made me feel supported. The hands-on learning approach was also a significant highlight.
How did your health challenges impact your career choice?
Childhood hospitalizations helped me value life more, build resilience, and shape my desire to work in healthcare.
What do you enjoy most about your current job?
I love the patient connections, the positive work environment at the small clinic, and the strong relationships with colleagues and patients.
What advice do you have for aspiring dental assistants?
My advice is simple: Just do it. It’s easier than it seems, and everything will fall into place once you get your foot in the door.
