An official welcome for SJVC’s Madera campus
SJVC Madera opened its doors in September 2014, but last month, it received an official welcome at a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the grand opening.
The Madera campus is located at 2185 West Cleveland Avenue, right across the street from the Madera Fairgrounds. SJVC Madera offers Business Administration, Medical Assisting and Medical Office certificate programs.
Guests at the ribbon cutting — held Feb. 25, 2015 — toured the campus and met students and staff. Guest speakers included Mayor Robert Poythress and Medical Assisting student Araceli Campos. Also in attendance were representatives from the Madera Chamber of Commerce, Congressman Jim Costa’s office and Senator Anthony Canella’s office.
Mayor Poythress congratulated SJVC, CEO Mike Perry and Campus Director Ben Almaguer on the new campus and the College’s success over its nearly 40 years in existence.
Medical Assisting student Araceli Campos shared her personal story of trials and tribulations. She said that making the decision to attend SJVC has been a highlight in her life, changing it in a positive way.
“I was at the end of my road,” says Araceli. “I had no hope for my future, no plans for a career, much less for success.”
Araceli, a single mother of two, had her first child at the age of 14. Growing up, she experienced physical abuse and as an adult, she dealt with divorce, addiction, incarceration, and even the loss of a child.
Now, she’s close to completing SJVC’s Medical Assisting program to earn a Certificate. She hopes to continue her education after the program by pursuing an Associate’s Degree in Medical Assisting or Nursing.
“I believe I do not have the option to fail,” Araceli said. “With the help of SJVC, I am a more confident and motivated individual who chooses to make a change for a brighter future for me and my children.”
There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that she will have a bright future ahead. Thanks to Araceli and the Madera community for making SJVC’s newest campus feel so welcome to Madera.
